The 3rd Battalion, 126th Infantry was deployed to Detroit in the aftermath of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination on April 4, 1968, to help quell the riots that broke out across the city and many others in response to the murder. The National Guard unit established round-the-clock patrols to maintain order and prevent further violence.
