The 38th Infantry Regiment was an original "Buffalo Soldier" unit, organized at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, in 1866, and was part of the U.S. Army's Infantry Branch. These African American enlisted soldiers served on the western frontier before the regiment was consolidated with the 41st Infantry Regiment and redesignated as the 24th Infantry Regiment in 1869. The 38th Infantry played a significant role in the legacy of African American military service, a legacy that also includes the famous cavalry units, the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
