The 38th Infantry Regiment is not typically associated with the term "Buffalo Soldiers" in the same way the cavalry and the later 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments were; instead, the original Buffalo Soldier units were formed in 1866 and included some infantry, but the 38th Infantry was a separate Civil War unit, and the unit that served at Jackson Barracks was the 25th Infantry Regiment (which absorbed the 38th and 41st Infantry after the Civil War). The name "Buffalo Soldiers" was first applied to the African-American soldiers who served in the six all-Black regiments formed after the Civil War.
