The Women's Army Corps (WAC) was the women's branch of the United States Army, founded in 1942 during World War II. It was created to serve in non-combat roles, freeing up male soldiers for combat positions. The WAC was originally established as the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) and was converted to an active duty unit in 1943 as the WAC, with its first director being Oveta Culp Hobby. The WAC's success helped pave the way for future women's rights advancements in both military and civilian sectors.
