99th Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Battle Babies" or "Checkerboard," played a significant role in World War II, particularly during the Battle of the Bulge. Formed in late 1942, they trained extensively before being deployed to Europe in late 1944. They faced their baptism by fire during the German Ardennes Offensive, also known as the Battle of the Bulge, where they were initially deployed to the "Ghost Front" in Belgium near the German border.
